Rapid Progress

The NICU team has been impressed by how rapidly they have been progressing in their development. They skipped all these steps in terms of feeding, moving from nippling three (Sophianne) or four (Rena) times a day straight to 8 times a day. They were both feeding well, so the nurses decided to give it a try with both girls yesterday and they did amazingly well! They drank from the bottle or nursed eight times in a row without any signs of distress. Sophianne decided to let them know that she's ready to only eat from the bottle or from mommy by yanking out the feeding line in her nose! The nurses decided they weren't going to try to put it back in her. This morning, they also removed Rena's. It was nice to see both of their faces without the feeding line in their nose.

I was also informed an hour ago that the doctor ordered for the girls to be taken out of the incubator and put in an open crib. This is the last threshold they must cross. If they can show that they can regulate their body temperature, eat, and gain weight, they can be discharged. I asked the head doctor when she thinks the girls might be discharged and she said, "Possibly on Saturday!" They all encouraged us to get ready for that possibility. I'm so excited!
